Learning to Draw the Glyphs
Fischer, Henry George, Egyptian
Calligraphy: A Beginner's Guide to Writing Hieroglyphs, New York,
Metropolitan Museum of Art, c. 1988. [excellent step-by-step diagrams for drawing
all of the most common glyphs; especially helpful for drawing the numerous birds and
animals!]
Grammar Books
Hoch, James, Middle Egyptian
Grammar (Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities series vol.15),
Mississauga, Canada, Benben Publications, c. 1997. [The grammar book presently used
at U.C. Berkeley and other major universities in first-year Middle Egyptian language
classes. IMHO still the best grammar available in English for beginning students]
Allen, James P., Middle
Egyptian: An Introduction to the Language and Culture of Hieroglyphs,
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, c. 2000. [the latest Egyptian grammar
written in English, differing from "Standard Theory" in some grammatical points
and containing interesting essays about Kemetic society and thought. I would
recommend it as a supplement to Hoch's grammar.]
Gardiner, Sir Alan, Egyptian
Grammar: Being an Introduction to the Study of Hieroglyphs, Oxford,
Griffith Institute, c. 1988. [the most comprehensive reference grammar, with
thousands of examples of every grammatical structure. Outdated in some technical
points and very difficult to use as a textbook for self-study, but still excellent as a
supplementary reference to the other two textbooks mentioned]
Dictionaries
Hannig, Ranier, Großes
Handwörterbuch Ägyptisch-Deutsch (2800-950 v. Chr.), Mainz, Philipp von Zabern,
c. 1995. [very good Middle Egyptian-German dictionary, though without source references
for expressions]
Hannig, Rainer, and Petra Vomberg, Wortschatz
der Pharaonen in Sachgruppen: Kulturhandbuch Ägyptens, Mainz, Philipp
von Zabern, c. 1999. [Companion volume to the Großes Handwörterbuch, with
words grouped according to subjects]
Faulkner, Raymond O., A
Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian, Oxford, Griffith Institute, c. 1962.
[though not as complete as Hannig's dictionary, still the only Middle Egyptian-English
dictionary presently available]
Shennum, David, English-Egyptian
Index of Faulkner's Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian, Malibu, Undena
Publications, c. 1977. [the closest thing to an English-Middle Egyptian dictionary
that exists. A good companion to Faulkner's dictionary]
